Cook County Jail inmate dies after medical emergency, officials confirm

Ahmad Abed, a 32-year-old inmate at the Cook County Jail, died following an apparent medical emergency in the jail's Residential Treatment Unit. The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on Friday, after which medical staff initiated life-saving measures. Abed was then transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:25 p.m.

The cause and manner of Abed's death are pending an autopsy by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Abed was being held on multiple charges of violating an order of protection.
