Cathay Pacific Announces $11 Billion Deal for 30 Airbus A330neo Planes

Hong Kong's Cathay Group has placed a firm order for 30 Airbus A330-900 (A330neo) widebody aircraft. This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation as part of the airline's mid-size widebody fleet renewal program. The new aircraft will be used to modernize Cathay's existing A330/300 fleet and expand its operations on high-capacity regional routes. The fleet will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, which are designed to offer improvements in fuel efficiency.

The A330neo aircraft are capable of flying 7,200 nautical miles (13,330 km) nonstop, providing flexibility to serve longer-range destinations. The investment underscores Cathay's confidence in Hong Kong as a leading international aviation hub and its commitment to sustainable aviation, aligning with its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The purchase, estimated at a basic price of about $11 billion, is expected to be completed by the end of 2031, with options to buy an additional 30 aircraft.
