Black Bear Known as 'Delabear' Fatally Struck by Car in Newark

A black bear, named 'Delabear,' was struck and killed by a vehicle on Route 1 near School Bell Road in New Castle, Delaware, around 11 p.m. on June 25. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured. The Delaware Department of Transportation promptly removed the bear from the roadway.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) will have wildlife biologists examine the bear to gather information on its origin, age, and sex, which could aid in tracking other transient black bears from neighboring states. The expansion of black bear populations in Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania has led to occasional sightings in Delaware. DNREC advises residents to exercise caution and be aware of wildlife while driving.
