Apple to Open iPhone NFC Payments to Third-Party Developers in iOS 18.1

Apple has announced that developers will soon be able to offer near-field communication (NFC) contactless transactions from within their own apps on iPhones, separate from Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. The new APIs will be available to developers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the UK, and the US in an upcoming developer seed for iOS 18.1, with additional locations to follow. Developers must sign a commercial agreement with Apple, request the NFC and Secure Element (SE) entitlement, and pay associated fees.

This move allows for a variety of applications, including in-store payments, car keys, closed-loop transit, corporate badges, student IDs, home keys, hotel keys, merchant loyalty and rewards cards, and event tickets. Apple has emphasized the security and privacy aspects of this solution, leveraging the Secure Enclave, biometric authentication, and Apple servers. The Secure Element is an industry-standard certified chip designed to securely store sensitive information on the device.
