Apple Explains Deleted Photos Bug in iOS 17.5

Apple has released the iOS 17.5.1 update to address a bug that caused deleted photos to reappear on some users' devices. The issue, which stemmed from database corruption within the device's file system, did not involve iCloud Photos. The problem caused old photos, sometimes from as far back as 2010, to reappear in the Photos library, affecting a small number of users. Apple clarified that neither iCloud Photos nor the company itself had access to these resurfaced pictures.

The bug was linked to incomplete deletions of photos stored on the device and could persist through backup restores or device-to-device transfers. Users affected by this issue are required to manually delete the resurfaced photos from their devices and remove them from the Recently Deleted album in the Photos app. Apple has assured users that this is a rare issue and has taken steps to fix it with the iOS 17.5.1 update.
