Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders, 90, dies in Washington plane crash

Former astronaut William Anders, known for his role in the Apollo 8 mission and the iconic "Earthrise" photo, has died in a plane crash near the San Juan Islands in Washington state. Anders was piloting a vintage Air Force T-34 Mentor aircraft when it crashed into Puget Sound near Orcas Island at around 11 a.m. local time. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that Anders was the sole occupant of the aircraft.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the crash. The plane, which belonged to Anders, sank after hitting the water approximately 80 feet offshore of Jones Island. A search and rescue mission is underway, and the wreckage will be transported to an offsite facility for further examination. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, with a final report to follow within 12 to 24 months.
