Wisconsin Reports 2 Deaths, 1 Hospitalized from West Nile Virus
Two people in Wisconsin have died and another has been hospitalized due to the West Nile virus (WNV), according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS). The first three human cases of WNV in the state this year were reported in Outagamie, Fond du Lac, and Brown counties. The virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito and is not transmitted directly from person to person or animal to animal.
Health officials recommend reducing exposure to mosquitoes and eliminating stagnant water where mosquitoes breed as preventative measures. The virus can cause symptoms in about 20% of those infected, with severe illness developing in approximately 1 out of 150 cases. Common symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle ache, rash, and fatigue. There are currently no vaccines to prevent or treat West Nile virus in humans.
