Volusia Deputy's Body Cam Captures Rescue of Missing Autistic Boy from Pond

A 5-year-old autistic boy was rescued from a pond in Deltona, Florida, by Volusia County Sheriff's Deputy Wes Brough after the child went missing from his home. The boy's father reported him missing around 7:30 p.m., stating that his son had escaped through a second-story door, triggering an alarm. Deputies initially searched the house and the surrounding area but expanded their search to nearby bodies of water when they could not locate the child.

Deputy Brough found the boy in a pond several blocks from his home. Body camera footage shows Brough diving into the water and carrying the boy back to dry land. The child was medically cleared on the scene and subsequently returned to his family. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office highlighted that their deputies receive Autism Awareness Training to better handle incidents involving individuals with autism.
