Trump Fails Third Attempt to Remove Judge in Hush Money Case
Justice Juan Merchan of New York has denied a third request from Donald Trump's legal team to recuse himself from the case involving Trump's conviction on charges related to hush money payments. Trump's defense argued that Merchan's impartiality could be compromised due to his daughter's work with a political consultancy that has Democratic clients, including Vice President Kamala Harris. Merchan dismissed these claims, describing them as "rife with inaccuracies and unsubstantiated" and noting that higher courts had already denied similar arguments.
The case involves Trump's conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a $130,000 payment made by his former lawyer Michael Cohen to porn star Stormy Daniels to prevent a sex scandal before the 2016 presidential election. Trump's lawyers characterized the request for recusal as necessary to ensure fairness, while prosecutors labeled it a "frivolous" attempt to disrupt proceedings. Merchan is scheduled to sentence Trump on September 18.
