Sony Increases PlayStation 5 Prices in Japan
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a price increase for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) in Japan, set to take effect on September 2, 2024. The standard PS5 model will now be priced at ¥79,980 ($550), a significant rise from its previous price of ¥66,980. The Digital Edition will also see an increase, going from ¥59,980 to ¥72,980. The company attributes these adjustments to the challenging global economic environment and its impact on business operations.
In addition to the console price hike, Sony will also raise the prices of related peripherals, including the DualSense wireless controller and the PlayStation VR2. This marks the first price revision for the PS5 and its peripherals since the model was updated to a slimmer version in November 2023. This move comes as PS5 sales have slowed, and Sony is expected to release a more powerful mid-cycle update of the console later this year. Sony projects to sell 18 million PS5 consoles globally in this financial year, down from 20.8 million the previous year. Concerns remain that these price hikes may extend to other regions.
