Singaporean Man Jailed for Framing Wife with Cannabis
Tan Xianglong, a 37-year-old man from Singapore, has been sentenced to nearly four years in jail for attempting to frame his estranged wife by planting cannabis in her car. Tan was motivated by resentment towards his wife, whom he felt had not contributed enough financially to their marriage, and suspected her of infidelity. He purchased over 500 grams of cannabis through a Telegram channel, borrowing S$2,600 from a friend to pay for it. Tan's plan involved placing the cannabis in his wife's car, hoping that she would be charged with drug trafficking, which can carry the death penalty in Singapore.
Tan's wife became suspicious when she noticed him loitering near her car and reported him to the police. The police subsequently searched her car and found the cannabis. However, a laboratory analysis revealed that the drugs contained only 216.17 grams of pure cannabis, less than half of the total weight. Despite Tan's lawyer arguing that he was suffering from depression at the time of the offence, the court rejected this claim based on medical findings that Tan did not have any mental disorder. Tan was sentenced to three years and ten months in prison for drug possession and illegal planting of evidence.
