In a video posted on social media, Kennedy recounted the story to actress and comedian Roseanne Barr. Kennedy stated that he initially found the bear while falconing and planned to skin it in New York State. He intended to make it appear that the bear had been hit by a bicycle by placing it in the park. The incident occurred in October 2014, when the bear was discovered by a dog walker, who then alerted the police.

Kennedy revealed that he and his friends thought it would be amusing to create the scene with the bear and a bicycle. The admission came after a fact-checker from The New Yorker contacted him to verify the story. Kennedy's actions at the time attracted media attention and prompted an investigation by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) into potential law violations related to the possession and disposal of the bear. Despite the initial media frenzy, the story eventually subsided until it resurfaced with the recent fact-checking inquiry.
