PM Modi Reaffirms Pledge to Conserve Lions on World Lion Day

World Lion Day, observed on August 10th, emphasizes the critical role lions play in ecosystems and underscores the urgent need for their conservation. The day brings attention to the declining lion population, affected by habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching. Lions are essential in maintaining ecological balance by protecting various species and habitats. In India, the Asiatic lion population has increased from around 523 in 2015 to approximately 674 in 2020, thanks to initiatives like 'Project Lion' which focuses on long-term conservation efforts. The Gujarat Forest Department is pivotal in these efforts, conducting regular population censuses and continuous wildlife monitoring.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India's commitment to lion conservation on World Lion Day. He praised the conservation efforts and the increase in the lion population in Gir, Gujarat. Modi also highlighted the Union Cabinet's approval of the International Big Cat Alliance, which aims to foster international cooperation among 97 range countries for the protection of big cats. He invited wildlife enthusiasts to visit Gir National Park to witness the conservation efforts firsthand and experience the habitat of the Asiatic lion.
