Massive Whale Found Dead on Southern California Beach
A 40-foot juvenile fin whale washed up on Torrance Beach in Southern California and subsequently died, as reported by Los Angeles County Lifeguards. The whale was initially spotted in the surf at around 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 10. Wildlife experts from the Marine Mammal Care Center and the National Marine Fisheries Service were notified, but despite their efforts, the whale did not survive.
The whale's carcass will remain on the beach while experts develop a plan for its removal. Fin whales, which can reach lengths of up to 85 feet and weigh as much as 80 tons, are classified as endangered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Responders are coordinating to secure the site and decide on the best method to manage the whale's remains.
