Global IT Outage Disrupts Indian Airlines, Brokerages
A global IT outage linked to issues with cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has disrupted services for brokerage firms, airlines, and other critical sectors worldwide. In India, brokerage firms such as Nuvama, Edelweiss, Motilal Oswal, 5Paisa, Angel One, and Groww reported technical issues affecting hundreds of thousands of users. The disruptions extended to airports, impacting check-in systems for airlines like Akasa Air, Indigo, SpiceJet, Vistara, Air India, and Air India Express. While Indian stock exchanges NSE and BSE stated that their operations were unaffected, traders and brokerage platforms experienced significant issues with rate refresh and order placement.
The outage also impacted major oil and gas trading desks in London and Singapore, as well as LSEG Group's news and data platform, which affected user access globally. U.S. airlines experienced communication issues, leading to ground stops, while Australian services also reported disruptions. Microsoft has been working to resolve the issues, which reportedly stem from CrowdStrike's antivirus protection software.
In a separate incident, Russian prosecutors have sentenced Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich to 18 years in prison on espionage charges. The charges, which have been denounced as fabricated by his employer and the U.S. government, were brought to trial in March 2023. Gershkovich, who was on a reporting trip in Yekaterinburg, has pleaded not guilty, with a verdict expected later in the day.
