Gibson County Schoolhouse Makes Indiana's 10 Most Endangered List
Indiana Landmarks has released its 2024 10 Most Endangered list, highlighting historic sites at risk due to neglect, new development, and lack of funding. The list aims to advocate for these sites, educate the public about their significance, and raise funds for critical repairs. Among the newly named endangered sites is Collman School in Snake Run, Gibson County, built in 1875. The school served as a local educational institution and a venue for community events before closing in 1927. It has remained vacant and deteriorating for nearly a century.
Other sites on the list include the International Harvester Engineering Building in Fort Wayne, The State Theatre in Anderson, The West Side Recreation Club in South Bend, and the Prince Hall Masonic Temple in Indianapolis. Since its inception in 1991, the annual list has featured 170 sites, with 105 restored or no longer at risk. The list serves as a crucial tool for preservation efforts, aiming to secure the future of these historic landmarks through advocacy and fundraising.
