Ghana Prepares for Three-Week Power Cut Amid Gas Shortage
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a three-week power interruption due to a reduction in gas supply from Nigeria. The supply reduction, which began on Wednesday, is attributed to maintenance work by a gas supplier in Nigeria, leading to decreased power generation capacity across Ghana. To manage electricity distribution efficiently, ECG has implemented load shedding. The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) reported a decrease in gas volumes after one of its producers in Nigeria shut down its facility for maintenance, affecting gas transportation to customers in Togo, Benin, and Ghana.
In response to the supply challenges, President Nana Akufo-Addo has reduced electricity exports to neighboring countries. ECG has assured the public that it is working with stakeholders to minimize the impact on consumers. The situation is compounded by financial difficulties, as private electricity suppliers are owed $1.6 billion by the state power company.
