Escaped Macaque from German Wildlife Park Found in Apple Tree
A young Barbary macaque escaped from Salem Monkey Mountain wildlife park near Lake Constance in southern Germany, causing concern in the local community. The animal was last seen near a motorway in the town of Uhldingen-Mühlhofen and was later found in an apple tree at a camping area. Park manager Roland Hilgartner suspects the macaque managed to jump from tree to tree to clear the fence around its enclosure.
The enclosure at the park is designed to make it difficult for the animals to leave, but they can still return from the outside. Hilgartner believes that the macaque could survive well outside the park due to the availability of plant food and insects. The species, native to Morocco and Algeria, is listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List as threatened, with a global population estimated at fewer than 8,000 individuals.
