Equinor Teams with Eidesvik for First Ammonia-Powered Supply Vessel
Equinor has entered into a contract with Eidesvik Offshore to retrofit the Viking Energy supply vessel to run on ammonia, aiming to reduce emissions by at least 70 percent. The project, supported by a €5 million grant from the EU Horizon Europe program, will see the vessel operational with low emissions by 2026. This initiative aligns with the Norwegian government's requirements for low-emission solutions from 2025 and zero emissions from new supply vessels starting in 2029.
The Viking Energy will be the world's first supply vessel to be fueled by ammonia. The conversion, part of the European innovation project Apollo, involves installing a new Wärtsilä engine, a complete fuel gas supply system, and exhaust after-treatment. This retrofit is expected to play a significant role in Equinor's goal to halve maritime emissions from its Norwegian operations by 2030. Despite ammonia's benefits in reducing carbon emissions, concerns about its high toxicity and safety remain.
