Colorado to Relocate Copper Creek Wolf Pack After Livestock Attacks
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is relocating the Copper Creek wolf pack, consisting of two adults and at least three pups, due to ongoing livestock depredation in Grand County. Since their reintroduction in December 2023, the wolves have been linked to the deaths of 15 cattle and nine sheep. The decision to relocate the pack comes after significant consideration and feedback from various stakeholders, including ranchers who have urged the state to take action.
The relocation effort is supported by federal partners and follows the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's rules for experimental populations. The exact location where the wolves will be moved has not been disclosed for the safety of the animals and staff involved in the operation. This action marks a critical point in Colorado's wolf reintroduction program, which aims to restore the gray wolf population in the state. CPW is planning to release an additional 10 to 15 wolves later this year as part of ongoing reintroduction efforts.
